5 Most Haunted Places Around SacramentoWith a history as long and varied as Sacramento’s, you know the city is sure to have several paranormal hotspots. If you’re interested in experiencing some of your own hair-raising events, check out a few of these most haunted places around Sacramento.

Dingley Steam Coffee & Spice Mill Building

Located in the Old Sacramento State Historic Park, Dingley Steam Coffee & Spice Mill Building is one of the original buildings of the city and home to some unexplained happenings. In the downstairs area of the building, people report items being thrown off the shelves. When they’re upstairs, they say they can hear things moving downstairs even though they know they’re alone. The strange happenings are attributed to the ghost of Nathaniel Dingley, who was the original owner of the building.

Old Sacramento Tunnels

Although many people don’t realize it, Sacramento sits on top of the original town, which means you can find a network of empty tunnels and even sections of the abandoned town underneath the city. Most of these tunnels were deserted when rising water from the Sacramento River swamped them. However, some of them are still open today. Many of the transient folks who look for shelter in the tunnels refuse to sleep in certain sections because of strange noises and unexplained shadows.

California State Library

According to employees and patrons, the hushed aisles of the California State Library have been the site of several unusual occurrences. Many people say they see the apparition of an old man wearing glasses and browsing through books in the California section. Some people even say he’ll hush them if they disturb him. Additionally, employees at the library say they’ve heard the sound of books being placed on or taken off the shelf even though nobody is there with them.

Delta King

The Delta King has had a long history, starting as a commuter boat between Sacramento and San Francisco in the late 1920s and 30s. Today it offers two restaurants, lodging, and a theater, and it’s apparently one of the most haunted places in Sacramento. Many people say the spirit of the original captain haunts the riverboat. Employees on the riverboat say they’ve spotted the captain’s ghost sitting in the balcony, and they’ve also heard footsteps on deck when they know they’re alone. One time, a glass of water was knocked over near the soundboard even though nobody was near it.

Freeport Factory

It should come as no surprise that the Freeport Factory is one of the most haunted places in the city since several employees died on the job there. Those brave enough to explore the factory have reported a variety of unexplained activity. The most unsettling experience is the sound of disembodied children’s laughter. Other people say the door to the factory will swing shut and lock them inside if they don’t have someone stand there to hold it open.
