If you’re looking for a vehicle with that extra bit of trunk space and passenger seating, a hatchback is a way to go. Fortunately for car buyers, Kia has a lineup of excellent hatchbacks with the amenities you want to meet your ideal checklist. Here are three models to keep in mind as you search for your perfect hatch upgrade.
Kia Soul
The Kia Soul is a four-door hatch that comes in at an affordable starting MSRP of $16,200. Its 2019 counterpart packs a similar design for only $290 more. Both models come in three trims — the Base, Plus (+), and Exclaim (!) — and seat up to five passengers comfortably. A 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve engine make up the Soul’s unit lineup, capable of producing up to 28 mpg combined.
Despite its compact size, the Soul still packs plenty of space to suit your passenger and cargo needs. It offers up to 40.9 inches of legroom, 53.2 inches of hip room, and 55.5 inches of shoulder room. A passenger volume of 101 cubic feet and cargo volume of 61.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down to round out this list of dimensions. Add on an optional UVO infotainment system and panoramic sunroof, and you have a hatch that’s ready to hit the road.
Kia Niro
Looking for a hatch with an eco-friendly appeal? The Kia Niro gets a full parallel hybrid system that pairs perfectly with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, AC synchronous permanent-magnet motor, and 1.56-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The result: an EPA estimate that peaks at 50 mpg combined. Plus, it starts at $23,340 and offers the FE, LX, EX, and Touring trims, all boasting excellent performance.
It further impresses with an Active Eco System to monitor engine, transmission, and AC output for enhanced fuel efficiency, along with a laminated, sound-absorbing front windshield that reduces wind noise transfer to the cabin. In terms of space, the Kia Niro gets up to 41.7 inches of legroom, 53.7 inches of hip room, and 56 inches of shoulder room. A passenger volume of 101 cubic feet is perfectly suited for five, and a cargo volume of 54.5 cubic feet makes storing your luggage a breeze.
Kia Rio 5-Door
A hatch alternative to the Kia Rio compact sedan, the Rio 5-Door is still an affordable pick at $14,200 and is available in three trims: the LX, SE, and EX. Powering the Rio 5-Door is a 1.6-liter inline-four engine that helps it reach up to 32 mpg combined, a pretty impressive estimate if you ask us. Other cool features include heated rear glass with a timer to expertly clear your windshield of frost and snow, as well as steering wheel-mounted audio buttons for distraction-free radio control.
Heading into the cabin, you can expect up to 42.1 inches of legroom, 52.9 inches of hip room, and 54.1 inches of shoulder room. Passenger volume is pretty fair at 90.5 cubic feet, and a cargo capacity of 32.8 cubic feet is made possible with the rear seat folded down.
Are you on the hunt for a Kia hatchback? Look no further than these top three contenders.
