Every big city has a museum that serves as a great way to experience the history and culture of the area. In Sacramento, there are plenty of museums for you to check out. If you want to show your family the rich culture of the Sacramento area, then take in some culture at these three Sacramento area museums.
California State Railroad Museum
The California State Railroad Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and cultural experience of the railroad system throughout the state. Without railroads, crossing the country may not have been possible for most people. They finally connected both halves of the country so that it was easier to travel from coast to coast.
You can see what it was like to ride the rails on one of the museum’s Excursion Train Rides. The Excursion Train is entering its 35th year of operation, and you can take a ride around Old Sacramento. Each trip is a bit different with a series of different cars and a different engine each time. You’ll get to see what it was like to travel on a train first-hand.
Crocker Art Museum
The Crocker Art Museum also has a place in the cultural history of Sacramento. It was the first public art museum on the west coast when it was founded in 1885. Since then, it has been the host of many art exhibits over the years that brought together the best that Sacramento has to offer. The Museum is easy to get to if you drive or by public transportation.
The Crocker Art Museum hosts local events as well. One of the more recent events let you bid on art pieces from leading artists around the world. The museum is always looking for new members to grow the organization and offers a wide assortment of educational programs. You can learn about art and create your own in educational classes offered on a regular basis.
California Museum
For a look at the history of California in a new and exciting way, visit the California Museum. It hosts a wide array of exhibits each year focusing on the state’s cultural and political history. Diversity is a big focus for the museum, and it goes through a lot of effort to make sure that different groups are represented in its work. There are short-term exhibits that rotate frequently as well as a few signature exhibits that are unique to the museum.
If you are interested in learning about the indigenous population of California, many of the signature exhibits can tell you everything that you would want to know. There is also an exhibit for notable women in California’s history.
