Trim Levels
Both the hatchback and sedan body styles of the 2018 Kia Rio come in three trim levels. These include LX, S, and EX. Exterior equipment on the LX model includes automatic halogen headlights, 15-inch wheels, and solar control glass. In the middle of the trim levels, the S has features like power-operated and heated side mirrors and keyless entry. At the top of the options, the EX trim level boasts 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, and an exclusive glossy black and chrome grille.
Engine
Every model of the 2018 Rio comes with the same engine: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder unit that pumps out 119 pound-feet of torque and 130 horsepower. It works with a six-speed manual transmission on the base trim and a six-speed automatic transmission on the upper trim levels. The automatic trim is available as an upgrade on the LX trim.
Performance
Front-wheel drive is the standard configuration for all Rio models, which delivers easy handling and impressive fuel efficiency. According to the EPA, estimates come in at 29 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg combined with the manual transmission. The automatic transmission drops the city estimate to 28 mpg, although the highway and combined estimates remain the same.
Interior

The cabin of the 2018 Rio is surprisingly roomy, offering space for taller passengers in the front and the rear. If you need more cargo space, opt for the five-door model. Choose the base LX trim and your Rio's interior will include a height-adjustable driver's seat; a tilt-only steering wheel; and a four-speaker audio system with a USB port, satellite radio, an auxiliary jack, and a 5-inch display screen.

The midlevel S trim tacks on power windows, map lights, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, an additional charging USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, two additional USB ports, and a sliding center console armrest with storage space. Choose the EX to get a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel; nicer cloth upholstery; dual illuminated vanity mirrors in the front; and a nicer central display area with a 7-inch touch screen, Kia's Uvo infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration. An available package adds some leather upholstery accents and red interior elements.

Safety Features

No matter which trim level of the 2018 Kia Rio you choose, it will come equipped with a full suite of standard safety features, including advanced dual-front, front-side, and full-length side-curtain air bags; three-point seatbelts in all five seats; electronic stability and traction control; anti-lock brakes; hill-start assist control; a rearview camera; and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

Additionally, the frame of the vehicle includes side-impact door beams, along with front and rear crumple zones to better protect passengers in the event of a crash. The EX trim level also tacks on forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
